I Mastered the Art of Fighting Without Knowing How to Fight

  1. This is the style Bruce Lee claimed to railroad train in Enter the Dragon, just what does he mean by information technology? Before in the picture he talked well-nigh how the highest form of technique would be to have no technique but to let your body react without thinking. Seeing every bit a few members have their styles listed every bit "The art of fighting without fighting" they should know.

    Anyone?

  2. What he means by assuasive your body to react without thinking is that he felt a fighter'due south actions should be reflexes not conscious decisions. Past having a clear listen, you wont hesitate and you'll exist faster and more fluid. Its actually an awsome philosophy. If you're interested, cheque out the Tao of Jeet Kune Do.
  3. Wu-hsin. No mind boxing.:)
  4. At that place's a book called the fine art of fighting without fighting on kazaa, information technology'due south a good read ;)

  5. I'm pretty certain he meant not wasting yourself fighting if it wasn't actually necessary. Hence how he proceeded to play a trick on that guy into going out on the rowboat.
  6. Aye, I read something about that as well.

I recall Thokk is right too.

Bruce, in 'Enter The Dragon(Ceremony Edition)', as well mentioned, "When the opponent contracts, I expand. When he expands, I contract. And when there is an opportunity, I do not hit - It hits all by itself."

My theory later on thinking about that underlined role is that your fists and feet(tools of the trade as Bruce Lee calls them) has to have a life of their own.

"And when there is an opportunity, I do not striking - It hits all past itself."

The "It" he is referring to obviously means his FIST(or his foot). But in the pic, while he was saying that, he held up his fist.

    "It hits all past itself."

I believe it ways that your fist has to movement on information technology's own. In other words, Yous ARE NOT MAKING YOUR FIST Movement. You lot're non even thinking near it as Bruce says in the same scene, "Not thinking, yet not dreaming. Prepare for whatsoever may come up."

As I said earlier, your fist has to take a life of its ain.

Of course for this, you'll need quick reflexes to get a successful hit.

  7. see i believe information technology means something different to everyone its just how each individual interperts the whole thing. I call back it means just taking the crap out and leaving in the blank nessicities. No fancy junk just stuff that works. Its a hateful to an ends basically.

Practise what works with minimal effort along with reflexs that crave no thought just activity.

    only my x cents

    continue the modify

  8. Sort of relevant?

I oasis't heard about this expression before, and I don't want to go into what I recall Bruce meant, merely what Thokk and Adam mentions in their posts could be supported by some fields of fighting where I have rudimentary experience:

The german longswordfencers talks almost a consept they call Fûhlen (feeling). That is that you drill in some "standard" responses to "the crossing of the sword" (where the swordblades brand contact)

That situation have several potential outcomes, depending on where your opponent goes from at that place, and you haven't time to actively think abount the teqnices, they have to come on reflex.

Wresteling is allso a style where the body searches for windows of oppertuneties/dangerous situations that are so narrow that yous don't have fourth dimension to plan them.

  9. I remember yous guys are disruptive meanings of two different quotes here. "Fighting without fighting" I believe was just meant every bit a joke on the Australian guy, who was being all boisterous about how great his fighting was, merely to be defeated without a dial thrown. "I don't hit, it hits" is something different. For an example of this, look at when youre driving a familiar road. Practise you put witting thought into what you're doing? Probably not. That quote is referring to one getting so experienced that fighting is as intuitive and thoughtless as scratching an itch. I've fifty-fifty experienced it in a video game (a sign I played one in particular far too much). I was fighting my blood brother in it one mean solar day, and after an unabridged v minute game, I had no clue what I'd washed at all, but looking at the scores, I'd massacred my brother. Meanwhile, throughout the whole thing, my mind was on this particular purse of doritos, a flavor I'd not had in some while, and how much I was enjoying information technology. Nonetheless, my brother was beaten very desperately. I think the score was 5-one, and in this particular game, averaging ane knockout a minute was phenomenal. Not to mention but getting knocked out yourself one fourth dimension.
  10. Tireces, what IS your way of MA anyhow? JKD?
  11. I think 'The Art Of Figting Without Fighting' and 'I Dont Hit, It Hits' mean the same thing.

I call up the onetime mean to fight with out thinking, fighting subconsciously. The latter ways that, like the first qoute, I dont brand the control for my fist to hit, information technology instantly hits it self.

To practise somthing with out acually thinking is similar fighting without fighting, simply the aforementioned every bit punching with out acually punching.
  12. You tin can attempt to link "fighting without fighting" to information technology every bit much equally yous think, I like to think it was just a witty stab at how he brought the Australian guy down without a single tearing activeness against him.

    "whats your way"
    "the art of fighting...without fighting"
    "oh yeah? Prove me.'

Then he tricks him into getting stuck out on the rowboat. Seems to make sense to me.

  13. Spot on Tireces. That's what I think it to be besides.

The art of fighting without fighting means exactly that. Fighting without having to physically fight. Take the seen with the New Zealand guy for example.

Bruce won the fight, with even having to fight. How piece of cake is that? That is the fine art of fighting without fighting. Either by tricking the would-exist opponent, or outwitting him with conversation. Or perhaps just talking him out of the fight and going down the pub for a pint.

Here'south another example I read somewhere. It seems very plumbing equipment.

There is a Martial Arts practitioner who has but developed his own techniques. He believes them to exist very constructive. He has been grooming himself with his art for years, and he yearns to examination them in existent gainsay.

Along comes the day, after years of cocky comeback and style refinement, that the master now feels his new art is ready. Ready for a test in the existent world.

He decides to head out one day, to see if he put his skills to good apply. He takes a seat on a train, heading into the town. A few stops later a drunk boards.

The Martial Artist can here him coming through the carriages, getting louder and louder as the drunk gets closer.
"Oh, this may the opportunity I've been looking for" Thinks the Artist.
"I can exam my great new fine art on this disorderly boozer. Not only that, but the people on the railroad train will think highly of me for getting rid of him.

Finally the drunk gets to the carriage the Martial Artist is in. He slams open the door, making is presence known.

He'southward yelling and making allot of dissonance, shoving people aside, giving people dirty looks, swearing loudly at the people sitting back, trying not to get in his mode.

"I'one thousand going to teach him a lesson for being like this to these people, and I can test my new art." The artist says to himself, smiling from under his lid.

The drunk is getting closer and closer, being very aggressive and hateful.

"A footling closer, then he'll get what'south coming to him" Thinks the Artist. The drunk is now only a little more and so a few feet away. "A niggling closer, and then I'll jump up and requite information technology too him"

"That's information technology!" The Artist takes off his hat and starts to bound up, fists clenched.

And so at that moment, as the drunkard reaches the seat in front of the practitioner, a human being stands up and says "Hey mate, what wrong? Why are you upsetting all these nice people? Information technology looks similar you've had a rough day. Hither take this seat."

The man offers the drunk a seat next to him. He sits down, and starts telling the man how he got robbed of his job, and how his family had died in an accident.

For the remainder of the trip the drunkard had a shoulder he could weep on, and new friend who would listen to his woes.

Once the drunk had attain his destination, he got off the train with a grin on his face, and no one got hurt.

The old Martial Fine art Practitioner was amazed, and upset with himself for wanting to shell up the drunk, when all he wanted was an ear.

Perhaps his new manner is not the best after all?

  14. Now that, is what I think is the Fine art of Fighting Without Fighting.

As for the other quote, "It hits all by itself". I don't belive IT to be any particulat torso function, merely rather Information technology is the FIGHT. The FIGHT hits all past itself.

Bruce believed that when fighting, there is no such affair as two people fighting. Only i entity. The fight. Look at the Yin-Yang philosphy for example. Bruce carried it over to fighting. The 2 opponents are one. The one is It.

When the fight contracts and expends as one, information technology does it iteself, as ane. In that location is no need for one fighter to attack, the fight does it itself.

  15. That's a pretty good outlook on it too.

    Hmm...got me thinking.:D

  16. My curiousity kicked in. I have a question regarding that paragraph.

What about if at that place is a fight betwixt 1 person and a few others, let'due south say iii? Does that still apply to the Ying-Yang philosophy? Is it that the individual who is going against these 3 guys still counts every bit ONE - i entity? One vs 3. Is that WHOLE fight considered every bit 1 even though there are more than than two people involved?

  17. Fight is yet a fight.

Although I don't know how two people could fight one person at the same time. Information technology would get a chip difficult.

  18. Tireces has it spot on here in my opinion. The art of 'fighting without fighting' is about knowing when you have to fight, and more chiefly when you do non.

An experienced martial creative person might cross the road to avoid a guy who looks like he is going to cause trouble. I believe that is the 'art of FWF' - it is being aware of problem and avoiding it, and is a part of Martial Arts.

A less experienced creative person might experience like he/she has something to prove and walk past the guy to encounter what happens.
