The Mohu Leaf 50 is the antenna that started it all for me.

I was so sick of paying my high DirecTV neb, and since I was already on a month-to-month contract with them, I knew I had to make the switch to a cord cutters lifestyle ASAP. It wasn't because I needed to save the money… information technology was because my family really didn't use the channels DirecTV gave u.s.a.. We are a big Netflix household, and we rarely tuned the TV to DirecTV. And to brand matters worse, my cablevision bill was $88 just for TV (excluding internet)… no thank you. Something needed to change.

I did extensive enquiry online: on Amazon and anywhere else I could find DTV antenna recommendations. (To exist honest, there was no practiced place to do that, so I decided to build this site.)

Update: December 2016

While doing this research on Amazon before this year, I came to realize that there were A LOT ofleaf antennas out there. They all look the same with the square "leafage" part with a coaxial cable that connects it to the TV. However, after having my Mohu Leaf for nigh a twelvemonth and reviewing quite a bit of other antennas, I realize now that all leafage (otherwise known equally thin and flat) antennas are created equal. The Mohu Leaf fifty has outperformed every unmarried antenna that has come through my door since then.

Setup

Subsequently all my online research, I decided to purchase the Mohu Leaf 50. It came in its "frustration-free packaging", which I approximate was squeamish, but really merely looked similar a articulate plastic bag that wasn't sealed close by a hot press. Information technology came with essentially three parts: the white "leaf" antenna function, the amplifier/power function and the coaxial cablevision.

Installation was a breeze (they even had tags on the cables to tell yous where they go… overnice!). I decided that I was going to hang it directly above the Goggle box, so I tacked it upward there in my drywall with the two thumbtacks they nicely provided. The amplifier screwed easily into the antenna, and the coaxial cable then screwed easily into the amplifier. Naught special well-nigh this, but it was like shooting fish in a barrel. A couple coaxial connections, plug it in and voila!

The adjacent step was to plan the Goggle box to search for channels available through the antenna. How to do this is entirely dependent to the blazon of Idiot box you lot have, only I just needed to go toSetup -> TV -> Browse for channels. After scanning for well-nigh five minutes, information technology said information technology had found 28 channels, which included the major channels that NoCable said it would. 🙂

Aesthetics

The Mohu Leaf fifty has been the smallest leaf antenna I accept reviewed thus far. It is about 2 inches less in its tiptop and width than the other leading brands. This makes a huge deviation when you are trying to hide it, but information technology did not hamper the reception of any channels.

Well, I guess for a foliage antenna, it looks fine. Actually, probably amend than "fine", only I am not in honey with having an antenna tacked up on my wall. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't exactly happy with having this on my roof either:

Performance

I bought this antenna in January 2016, and have had absolutely no problems with it nevertheless. Pelting or snowfall, the thing merely works. I'm sure this has something to practice with where I have it hung, but I am about l miles abroad from the closest channel broadcast middle, and I have no problem what-then-e'er. And if you are non familiar, Western PA is quite hilly… and that hasn't affected this antenna at all.

Update: Jan 2017

Well, it finally happened. I was watching a Pittsburgh Steelers game a couple Sunday'south ago and the reception started getting choppy. Freezing. Pausing. Blank TV screen… it was the worst possible time for this to have happened (right in the heart of a game).

To be fair, there was a decent amount of snow falling that day, but at that place were no leaves on the trees at all. I checked all the connections between the Mohu Leaf and my Samsung TV, and made sure they were tight. During a commercial break I went through and re-scanned for channels. After about 5 minutes of scanning, CBS came back online and I had much better reception.

I am not sure what caused it, just I did read on Mohu's website that you should consider re-scanning for OTA channels one time a calendar month. Well, I did it once all of last yr, and it seemed to accept fixed the result. Clear reception e'er since.
